Kannapolis Receives Governor’s Innovative Small Business Community Award

The City of Kannapolis and the North Carolina Research Campus are recipients of Governor Beverly Perdue’s 2011 Innovative Small Business Community Award. Kannapolis is one of nine North Carolina communities honored in the award’s inaugural year.

The Governor’s Award recognizes projects, strategies and initiatives that reflect excellence in community economic development, small business and entrepreneurship, and sustainability in North Carolina. Communities were selected based on their creative solutions to improve quality of life and well-being through job creation and job sustaining activities.

The City of Kannapolis was recognized for the redevelopment of the former Fieldcrest Cannon and Pillowtex industrial complex into a bioscience research campus and for the public-private partnerships formed to support development of the North Carolina Research Campus.

Kannapolis Police Department Awarded AAA Carolinas Traffic Safe Communities Award

The Kannapolis Police Department (KPD) has been awarded the AAA Carolinas Traffic Safe Communities Award for a community of over 30,000 in population. The KPD is one of five agencies in the state to receive the award in this category.

Kannapolis was selected based on crash statistics, number of law enforcement officers per capita, and the department’s traffic safety program. UNCC provided statistical analysis and AAA Carolinas Foundation selected winners with emphasis on communities engaged in proactive traffic safety programs

During the past year, the Kannapolis Police Department has conducted instructional sessions with driver’s education classes at local high schools and partnered with two other Cabarrus County law enforcement agencies to conduct multi-agency sobriety checkpoints within Cabarrus County. The KPD also identifies high traffic crash/traffic safety zones and develops action plans to improve traffic issues.

The KPD has partnered with Jeff Gordon Children’s Hospital, CMC-Northeast, and the Cabarrus County Department of Social Services on six child safety events this year and participates in citywide festivals and events to promote traffic safety.
