KPD Gives Annual Awards

Roger Dale Carter

Last night, the early part of the City Council meeting was different than most. It was the time each year when the KPD gives its annual awards. The room was packed with proud family and department personnel, happy to recognize department members for their good works.

This year was special because, in addition to the Roger Dale Carter Memorial Service Award and the Norma C. Howard Memorial Service Award, four department members also received commendations for their actions on April 10 when Officer Chris Dial was fired upon during a traffic stop.

This year, the Roger Dale Carter Memorial Award went to Timothy Roth and the Howard award went to Lori Bradshaw.  Commendations were given to Sonya Furr,  Amber Pittman, Heather Helms and Chris Dial. You can read much more about them here.

Major Terry Clanton wins Robert Eury Memorial Award

Another award this week recognizing the City’s police department staff! Major Terry Clanton has won the Robert Eury Memorial award for an outstanding law enforcement officer who has served the citizens of Cabarrus County for at least 20 years. The office of the year award for Cabarrus County is given in memory of Lt. Robert Jackson Eury who was killed in the line of duty in 1972 responding to a domestic call.

Congrats Major Clanton!

Optimist Club names Chief Chavis top officer

In what he says was a total surprise to him, the Salisbury Optimist Club has named Kannapolis Police Chief Woody Chavis as its top law enforcement officer for 2010.

There is much more information this  Salisbury Post article.

Some of you know this, but for those that don’t, Chavis also has ties to major event in the region today.  Prior to becoming Kannapolis Police Chief, Chavis served on the pit crew for Dale Earnhardt, Sr.  I learned this for the first time last week during a tour of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The hall opens today.
